DTF Printing on Dark vs Light Garments: White Underbase & Opacity Guide

Why Garment Color Changes Your DTF Workflow

The single biggest difference between printing on a white tee and a black hoodie is the white ink underbase. Direct-to-Film uses white ink as a blocking layer so your CMYK colors stay vivid instead of mixing into the garment. Get this wrong and dark shirts come out dull or the transfer cracks. Stock the right DTF PET film and DTF ink so both workflows run cleanly.

Printing on Light Garments

On white or pastel fabrics, you can often print with little or no white underbase — the CMYK layer sits directly on the film and reads bright. This saves white ink, speeds production, and gives a softer hand. For very light pastels, a thin white layer can improve color accuracy, but it is optional.

Printing on Dark Garments

Dark and saturated colors require a full white underbase printed first, then the CMYK image on top. The white layer must be opaque enough to block the garment color completely; otherwise reds look maroon and blues look navy. This is why quality white DTF ink and a well-tuned printer profile matter.

Setting White Ink Opacity

Garment White underbase Notes
White / pastel None or thin Save ink; brighter CMYK
Light gray / beige Thin to medium Test for color shift
Black / navy / red Full, opaque Block garment fully; raise density if dull

Common Problems & Fixes

  • Dull colors on dark shirts: white density too low — increase white ink percentage in the RIP profile.
  • White showing at edges: over-sized underbase or mis-registration — tighten the profile margins.
  • Cracking on stretch: pair dark prints with a flexible hot melt powder and a medium heat press setting.

Bulk Printing Tips

Standardize by grouping orders: run all light-garment jobs with a low-white profile, then switch to the full-underbase profile for dark batches. This keeps ink usage predictable and reduces misprints.
